Google is making powerful, AI-powered photo editing features available to Google Photos users around the world. Starting in May, a suite of cutting-edge tools will be available to everyone, including Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Portrait Light, and Magic Editor. Let’s see what you can do with these tools.

Every time you pick up your camera to capture a magical moment, you end up with a blurry, disappointing photo. Photo Unblur aims to bring those holders back by using AI wizardry to intelligently sharpen blurry images. Leverage machine learning to automatically detect and enhance areas of ambiguity.

To use photo unblur, open the Google Photos app and press the edit photo icon.

Select “Unblur” from the top menu and move the slider to adjust the intensity.

Tap Done, then click Save Copy.

From photobombers to trash cans, distracting backgrounds can ruin a great photo. With Magic Eraser, these unwanted elements can be seamlessly removed with just a tap, powered by AI.

To use Magic Eraser, open Google Photos, select the image that contains the unwanted object, and click the edit icon.

portrait light

Portrait mode is an innovative feature for mobile photographers, simulating the coveted shallow depth of field look. But Google goes further with Portrait Light, which intelligently illuminates your subjects with beautiful, studio-quality lighting. You can also tweak the direction and intensity to your liking.

To use Portrait Light, open the Google Photos app and select the image you want to edit

Last but not least, Magic Editor offers advanced editing features in a deceptively simple interface. Thanks to the powerful generative AI model inside, you can reposition your subject, change the sky, and make all sorts of complex adjustments with just a few taps.

To use Magic Editor, select parts of your photo by tapping, drawing a circle, or using a brush.

Apply edits

Repeat steps 1-2 to continue editing your photo.

availability

Many of these AI editing techniques were previously exclusive to Pixel, but Google is now opening them up to all Google Photos users on Android and iOS. The rollout will begin on May 15th and continue over the next few weeks until the feature is delivered to compatible devices.

There’s one problem. Although the basic editing tools are available for free to everyone, Magic Editor has some limitations for non-Pixel owners. Specifically, free users only get 10 Magic Editor “saves” per month. To go beyond that, you’ll need a Pixel device or a premium Google One plan with at least 2 TB.
