Need proof that Samsung’s Galaxy software is inferior to the iPhone? Here it is

The thing I hate most about smartphones is the settings. Settings menus are hard to organize, and today’s phones are proof of that. Even the best phones have terrible settings, and this is a very difficult problem, so let’s take a look at how Samsung’s OneUI software became so terrible and why Apple’s iOS is better. To explain why, I would like to focus the discussion on settings. Please buckle up. I open the settings and the settings are bad everywhere, especially he gets ugly on Samsung phones.

[設定]What’s the best feature you can expect from a menu? Nothing. Really. I hope you never use the settings. In an ideal smartphone, there are no settings. The smartphone AI revolution is here. Eventually, AI will manage your settings. You tell the AI what you need and it makes adjustments.

To that end, Samsung may have the best settings on any smartphone. Bixby is Samsung’s much-maligned digital assistant that’s made for managing your settings. Most of the things you want to do with your Galaxy phone, and complain about below, can be simplified using Bixby.

Hold the Bixby button and tell your phone to “turn on Wi-Fi hotspot” or “change screen mode to Vivid” and Bixby will do it. Bixby knows your settings better than humans. That’s part of the problem. Setting up the Galaxy is so complex that AI needs to be in charge.

Setup requires as little as possible

Back to what I want: minimal effort. You don’t want to use the settings, and the longer you leave them open, the bigger the failure will be.

The most common settings on your phone should be available with a single swipe. On iPhone 15, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to quickly access Brightness and Wi-Fi, as well as quickly tap Do Not Disturb, turn on Power Saver, and open the Apple TV remote. . , or create a new reminder.

On my Samsung Galaxy S24, swiping down from the top of the screen reveals six quick settings buttons and a ton of notifications. You need to swipe again to find all quick settings. That’s the difference between Apple and Samsung. Too many tasks will require additional steps on your Samsung phone.

Even fast roads are slow

Samsung fans are yelling at me. Because actually he only needs one swipe to see all the quick settings buttons, but it’s a setting that needs to be enabled. Where do I enable this option? Swipe down twice and you’ll see a small “Customize” pencil icon. Tap that icon to enable some useful features, including all your quick settings with just one swipe.

You can also set up hot corners, like Apple uses, to show all your quick settings buttons at once. Of course, it should be on by default, but you’re in luck if you find this option. In fact, we hope you find one of these options.

These settings aren’t actually in the Settings app. Want to see quick settings buttons with a single swipe? That option is nowhere to be found in Settings. This only appears under the small pencil menu that appears when you swipe down twice. Suddenly, my Galaxy S24 Ultra feels more like a Legend of Zelda adventure than a modern smartphone.

Test your configuration

Apple and Samsung have very different philosophies when it comes to the Settings app. On iPhone, all settings are located in the Settings app. All of them. All settings for all the apps you use, as well as basic settings for your phone, are all in the same place. Therefore, the settings list will be very long as it will include all the apps on your phone.

My Galaxy S24, like all Android smartphones, has settings in each separate app. There is no problem if the settings are properly organized. Gmail settings are in Gmail, Facebook settings are in Facebook, but all other settings on your phone are[設定]It should be there. Unfortunately, this is not how Samsung’s phones are organized, and there doesn’t seem to be any consistent organization at all.

The setting may be located in the Settings app. Sometimes it’s hidden under a strange little icon, like in the “pencil” example above. If you see a mysterious cluster of dots, or pixels, stacked up somewhere on your Galaxy smartphone, it’s probably a hidden settings menu.

Worst of all, Samsung’s Settings app is extremely confusing. Apple’s list of settings is quite long, but once you start looking into it, it’s not that far off. No matter what features you find, you can find them in one or two steps.

To test this, I[設定]We’ve selected 10 common reasons to use menus. In addition to searching for the settings you want without using advanced shortcuts like long-pressing the Quick Settings button, we’ve mapped the steps necessary to achieve your settings goals on the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S24. The results were clear.

Swipe to scroll horizontally
function iPhone/iOS17 Galaxy/OneUI 6.1 Number of steps: iPhone / Galaxy winner
Turn on Wi-Fi hotspot Settings: Personal hotspot: Allow others to join Settings: Connections: Mobile hotspot & tethering: Toggle mobile hotspot (or tap text for more settings) 3/4 Iphone
change wallpaper Settings: Wallpaper Settings: Wallpaper and Style twenty two tie
Turn on power saving Settings: Battery: Low power mode Settings: Device Care: Tap “Battery”: Power Saving 3/4 iPhone
Add a Bluetooth device Settings: Bluetooth Settings: Connections: Bluetooth: Tap Bluetooth twenty four iPhone
Enable dark mode Settings: Display and Brightness: Select Dark Settings: Display: Dark 3/3 tie
Free up storage space Settings: General: iPhone Storage: Recommendations.or sort apps Settings: Device Care: Tap Storage: Check for outdated files. “Unused apps” “Duplicate files” “Large files” 4/4 tie
Check for system updates Settings: General: Software Update Settings: Device Care: Software Update 3/3 tie
Change lock screen password Settings: Face ID and Passcode: Change Passcode Settings: Lock screen and AOD: Screen lock type: PIN/Pattern etc. 3/4 iPhone
Turn off Tinder notifications Settings: Notifications: Tinder; Toggle to allow notifications Settings: Notifications: App notifications: Tinder: Allow notifications toggle 4/5 phone
Factory reset Settings: General: Transfer or reset iPhone: Prepare a new iPhone / Reset / Erase all content and settings Settings: General management: Reset: Reset … All settings / Mobile network settings / Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings / Accessibility settings / Factory data reset 4/4 tie

Galaxy phones aren’t fast. Half of these settings required fewer steps on the iPhone than on the Galaxy. In the other half, the configuration performed the same number of steps on each phone. Galaxy phones have never been faster.

Samsung can have faster processors, more megapixels, and win all the specs you want. You can’t beat Apple if your phone doesn’t feel good. Samsung, here’s proof that the way you use your phone is definitely more complicated. The higher the number of steps, the slower the speed. If Samsung wants to be the best and fastest phone, it’s time to dramatically improve its software.
