LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – With severe weather in many parts of Acadiana, owner Darren Domingue says, Lafayette Roofing and Contractors He told News 10 he’s currently experiencing an influx of overnight contractors. Here’s what you need to know to avoid falling victim to a scam.
“What they’re doing is door-knocking and telling customers that there was damage when in fact there wasn’t. This will encourage these customers to comply with the claim. They can’t pinpoint that the claim is due to a specific weather event. Insurance comes in. They claim the roof is not storm damage, but normal wear and tear that can’t withstand normal use. “I consider it to be a good thing,” Domingue said. “These homeowners now only have 30 days to have their roof replaced or their insurance company will take it down.”
Domingue said when hiring a contractor, you should always get three bids.
“If you are a legitimate roofing company, you should be able to get within $500, even if there is a slight difference. “They’re making up for it or cutting corners somewhere,” he said. “What’s happening with a lot of fraud and insurance fraud right now is that these contractors are showing up. They’ll tell you there’s a loss and they’ll give you what is effectively a blank slate where they give up your insurance rights and your money. We’re asking them to sign a contract. At that point, the contractor isn’t fighting for the homeowner’s well-being. They’re fighting for their own pocket.”
“That being said, let’s say there is damage internally or externally, not just to the roof,” he added. “They’ll take the full check. So now they don’t have the money to do it. That means they’re going to line their pockets and you’re also giving up all insurance rights.”
Domingue said he has filed more than 10,000 insurance claims over the past 10 to 12 years and has seen horror stories of people being scammed.
“Especially in this day and age, when people can’t afford it, it just breaks my heart to think about the importance of a roof protecting everything underneath. It’s about protecting your belongings, protecting your family, and so on. It’s one of the biggest expenses a homeowner has to incur, not just to protect everything,” Domingue said.
Don’t be fooled by the number 337, Domingue added. Because while many of these companies act like they have local owners, their employees don’t.
“These crews are coming and they don’t care if they do a good job or a bad job. They’re leaving and homeowners need to pick up the wreckage,” he said. Ta.
“When there’s an opportunity in the market like this, consumers need to consider potential contractors to fix it,” said Chris Babin, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau. “We want to be aware that there is potential for damage.” “A company entering the market or someone unaffiliated with the company may be trying to lure you into doing business. The company is not the reputable contractor or company you believe it is. .”
“The contracting industry is probably the industry with the most unscrupulous contractors,” Babin said. “Of course there are great companies out there, but you need to choose those companies and not the bad ones that just look like good companies.”
