While the Android music-making app scene is certainly healthier than it’s ever been, it’s still relatively rare to see new beat-making tools made specifically for Google’s mobile OS. Meteaure’s Polaris is a very welcome addition to the Play Store, especially since it’s perfect for creating music quickly on your phone or tablet.
This is the work of Arturia veteran Baptiste Le Goff. He previously worked on his V Collection titles as both a software engineer and product manager. Luckily for us, he’s also an expert on his Android.

Polaris therefore features both a sample and a synth engine, offering a groovebox-style workflow across six tracks. His 4×4 grid for each track allows you to input steps into your sequencer, giving you an easy way to add variation to your patterns using step modulation. You can also adjust the step length for each track (from 1/32 to 1 bar) and set trigger conditions so that each step does not sound every time.
Each track’s sample or synth engine is[デザイン]You can fine-tune it on the page. There’s also an output section here with filters and distortions with their own envelopes. There’s also a dedicated mix page with reverb and delay sends and output level controls. You can also mute tracks here, but as far as we know there is currently no option to solo tracks.
Polaris comes with a collection of samples, but you can also import your own samples. However, you cannot record directly to the app. If you want a groovebox-style workflow with that functionality, take a look at Koala.
However, the clean and concise GUI and feature set are very appealing. Also, the fact that Polaris is step-based means you don’t have to worry about lag issues during jams.
