She has found friends in US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen brought her to celebrate the recent immigration deal in Cairo. Meloni reportedly even persuaded Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a contrarian within the EU, to drop his opposition to more cash for Ukraine.
In recent years, Meloni’s far-right Italian Brothers and Spain’s hard-line nationalist party Vox have become important players, along with mainstream free-market parties like the Czech Republic’s Civic Democratic Party.
Meloni, a member of the youth wing of the neo-fascist Italian social movement whose party has fascist roots, refuses to be called a fascist himself. On the international stage, she supports Ukraine and remains staunchly anti-immigrant, like her right-wing colleagues, while toning down her criticism of Brussels.
ECR’s rhetorical and ideological positions were in focus throughout the weekend. The ECR wants more Europe in the face of external threats from Moscow and migrants, but not internal micromanagement in Brussels. They promote (Judeo)Christian values and support fighting Islamist terrorists, but avoid disrespecting all Muslims. And while many ECR member parties, such as Poland’s PiS, Spain’s Vox, and Cyprus’ ELAM, are pursuing LGBTQ+ rights, at the European level ECR politicians describe themselves as “anti-woke” and “traditional”. You are likely to hear them declare, “pro-family.” ”
With some overlapping ideologies, ELAM (an acronym for National Popular Front of Cyprus) became a promising addition to the ECR’s far-right membership. A far-right Cypriot party previously linked to Greece’s defunct and outlawed neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn was the de facto host of the weekend show.
A strong Europe of strong countries can tackle what Sotiris Ioannou, an ELAM member of the Cyprus parliament, calls “big problems”. Those include the economy, awakening challenges and the threat of terrorism from “many Islamists in Christian countries,” he said.
