Germany wins Group B, 3 teams aiming for final playoff spot

UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — While some teams are looking to stake their claim to a spot in the quarterfinals, others are looking to make the most of their experience at the Adirondack Bank Center as the IIHF Women’s World Championship begins. I’m about to finish it. Utica is in the homestretch! Here’s a recap of the IIHF Women’s World Championship for Tuesday, April 9th.

Germany 1, Sweden 0

It took Germany and Sweden eight minutes into the third period to score the first goal of the game, which was the game-winner. The goal came off the stick of Franziska Feldmeier and Germany won 1-0.

Tabea Bothhov and Selina Haider provided assists for the undefeated German team as they won Group B. Sandra Abstreiter knocked down 32 shots for the shutout victory, while Emma Soderbergh took the loss with 23 shots.

There were also penalties in this match, with both teams totaling 8 penalties (4 penalties each).

Both teams have already qualified for the quarterfinals. Germany will return to action after completing their Group B match on Tuesday against the Chinese team. If China wins that match, it will advance to the quarterfinals. With China losing, we will now wait to see the results between Denmark and Japan in the final stages of Tuesday’s match.

Sweden will return to action in the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 11th, against Team Canada.

Finland 5, Switzerland 2

Switzerland scored its first goal of the tournament when Lara Stalder tied the game with six minutes left in the first period, but Finland scored goals at the start and end of the period to give her team a 5-2 victory.

Petra Nieminen scored the fastest goal of the tournament just 42 seconds into the match, and Ronja Savolainen gave Finland the lead back with eight seconds remaining.

Jeni Hilyiski had three assists for the Finnish team, which outscored Switzerland 17-5 but only led 2-1 at the end of the first period. The Finnish team was able to pull away with a second goal thanks to goals from Sanni Vanhanen and Susanna Tapani.

Sinja Lehman cut the lead to two points with a shot into the top right corner of the net midway through the third, but Hiilikoski’s empty goal capped a four-point night for Finland. Sanni Ahola knocked down 13 shots for Finland’s first win of the tournament.

Both teams have already advanced to the quarterfinals and will play 4-5. Switzerland faces the Czech Republic on Tuesday and has one game left to get its first win.

America 1, Canada 0 (OT)

The match, which many are calling the biggest match of the tournament, did not disappoint. Team USA and Canada took nearly four periods to decide on a winner. With just over a minute left in overtime, Kirsten Sims scored the only winning goal of the game, giving Team USA a 1-0 victory and taking first place in Group A.

This is the third time in history that a game between the United States and Canada went scoreless into overtime. Team USA won all three of his matches, including his final match in 2016. This game was also the only overtime game in the tournament in which a shootout was not required.

Aerin Frankel stopped all 26 shots for the win. Anne-Renee Desbiens canceled out 29 points in the loss.

The recorded attendance of 4,017 was the largest attendance in Adirondack Bank Center history.

Both teams have already qualified for the quarterfinals and are awaiting their opponents. As the top seed in Group A, Team USA will face the third-place team in Group B, which was not yet established as of Monday morning. Team Canada took second place in Group B in the tiebreaker and will face Sweden in the other semifinal.

3 stars on day 2:

#1 — Aerin Frankel (Goaltender, Team USA) vs. Anne-Rene Desbiens (Goaltender, Team Canada): In a featured matchup on Day 5, the two goaltenders stopped a combined 55 shots, helping the team USA won with a 1-0 blowout.

#2 — Jenni Hiyliowski (Forward, Team Finland): Hiyliowski had four points with one goal and three assists in a 5-2 win over Switzerland.

#3 — Franziska Feldmeyer (Forward, Team Germany): Feldmeyer scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Team Sweden.

Tuesday schedule

Germany (3-0) vs. China (0-1-1-1), 11 a.m.
Czech Republic (1-2) vs. Switzerland (3-1), 3 p.m.
Japan (0-0-1-2) vs. Denmark (0-1-0-2), 7 p.m.
