Android finally gets its own “Find My” network

For years, iPhone owners have been able to track AirTags and other items using Apple’s Find My network. But until recently, Android users were out of luck. Sure, you can use Google’s Find My Device to find your phone, but that’s about as far as it goes.

The announcement of Google’s Find My Device network at last year’s Google I/O conference was welcome news for Android owners. This network allows people to find device trackers, headphones, and other items across a vast network of Android devices. However, security concerns delayed the launch of the Find My Device network. This service is only now available.

The delay is due to Apple and Google’s decision to collaborate on developing industry standards aimed at preventing malicious tracking. The standard requires trackers to alert nearby mobile phones of their presence. If an unknown tracker accompanies you during the specified period, your phone will alert you via the Find My Device app (Android) or Find My app (iPhone). However, it is important to note that this system does not automatically disable trackers.

Apple is rolling out tracking prevention features in iOS 17.5, expected to be released by the end of April 2024. And now, Google’s Find My Device network is live and the first devices are about to ship.

Chipolo ONE Point and Chipolo CARD Point trackers are two of the first Find My Device trackers to ship and are available for pre-order now and will begin shipping on May 27, 2024.

ONE Point is a 0.9-inch diameter keychain device perfect for tracking luggage, keys, and pets. It has a replaceable battery that lasts up to a year and emits up to 120dB of loud sound within a 200-foot range.

CARD Point is a slim tracker that measures 0.09 inches thick and 3.35 inches x 2.11 inches, making it perfect for wallets, handbags, or any item with slim pockets. Batteries have a lifespan of two years, after which they will need to be replaced.

Both trackers are IPX5 rated. This means that it can withstand water splashes, but should not be soaked in water or washed.

Chipolo ONE points cost $28 and CARD points are available for $35. For those considering purchasing both trackers, Chipolo is offering a bundle that includes ONE Points and Card Points for $77.

As someone who has used Apple’s AirTags and Find My networks extensively, I have found their tracking capabilities to be unparalleled in the Android ecosystem so far. But Google’s Find My Device network aims to change the game and offer the same kinds of benefits as Apple’s Find My network. In addition to Chipolo, other manufacturers such as Pebblebee have also started shipping trackers compatible with Google’s Find My Device network, giving Android users even more options.
