TL;DR

  • Apple has settled a Canadian class action lawsuit over “Batterygate,” which intentionally slows down older iPhones.
  • Affected iPhone owners in Canada can now submit compensation claims of up to CAD 150.
  • The deadline to file a claim is September 2, 2024.

Apple has agreed to pay Canadian iPhone users a class action lawsuit over poor performance. The lawsuit alleges that Apple secretly degraded the performance of older iPhone models, a controversy that became known as “Batterygate.”It was first reported mcroomersCanadian residents who owned affected devices can now submit a claim for compensation.

Apple will pay C$14.4 million (approximately $10.6 million) as part of the settlement, which was approved by the court on March 4, 2024. Eligible iPhone owners have until September 2, 2024 to file a claim. Individual payment amounts range from CAD 17.50 to CAD 150, depending on the total number of valid claims submitted.

If you are a current or former resident of Canada (excluding Quebec) and own an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, or iPhone 7, or 7 with iOS 10.2.1 (or later) Additionally, if you have or currently own iOS 11.2 (or later) installed before December 21, 2017, you may be eligible for coverage. To file a claim, users visit the designated payment website and enter their iPhone serial number.

The lawsuit stems from Apple’s admission in 2017 that it introduced a software update to limit maximum performance on some older iPhone models with degraded batteries. This was done to prevent unexpected shutdowns, but was not initially disclosed to customers, leading to widespread backlash. Apple faced similar lawsuits in other countries, including the United States, and reached settlements of $500 million.

Apple continues to deny the allegations in the lawsuit. The tech giant insists the settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing by the company.
