U.S. school district recognized for music education

The Unionville-Sebewein Area School District was recently awarded the title of “Best Community for Music Education” by the National Association of Music Merchants in recognition of its outstanding commitment to music education.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to school districts that demonstrate excellence in providing music access and education to students. Music is an important part of learning, including educational, cognitive and social skills, and benefits the children who take part in it. American band director Aaron Aikens agreed that in addition to learning, it is also important to instill discipline in students.

“Music education enhances cognitive development, fosters creativity and expressiveness, promotes mental health, cultivates social skills, instills discipline and perseverance, and fosters a lifelong love of music.” “It’s very important because it contributes to public awareness,” Aikens said.

U.S. High School Principal Chuck Arnold reiterated how important band is to any school and praised the environment Aikens created for U.S. band students.

“Mr. Aikens is one of the best music teachers I have ever seen, and the culture he has created in our band program creates an environment that our students want to be a part of.” said Arnold. “Mr. Aikens’ attention to detail and ability to build relationships with his students is second to none.”

Arnold, along with other staff and students, is proud to have a great band program in America. Most recently, his band’s program traveled to Grand Rapids over the winter to participate in the annual Michigan Music Conference, and he was one of eight in the state to perform at a conference for educators. “This award brings great pride to our school and community and helps students who participate in the band program walk with confidence and pride,” Arnold said. “Our school and community are extremely proud of our music program and this award will serve as an inspiration to upcoming young aspiring musicians.”
