According to Android Authority, with the new AI playlist feature, you just type in a prompt and the technology will adjust your playlist accordingly. For example, you can enter prompts such as “Music to keep you motivated during an intense gym session” or “Romantic music for a candlelit dinner with your wife.”

When you enter a prompt, Spotify uses LLM technology to understand your intent and examine your listening history and settings to create a playlist that matches your prompt.

If you don’t like the playlist, you can adjust it by entering more commands with the changes you want to see in the playlist. For example, if you want your playlist to include more bass-heavy songs, you can enter a prompt like “More bass.”

Prompts give you the freedom to be creative, but guardrails around the Spotify AI playlist feature prevent you from responding to prompts if you enter offensive language or anything related to current events or a specific brand. You can create playlists with prompts that reference locations, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even specific emojis.

Spotify confirmed last year that it was working on an AI playlist feature

In December 2023, TechCrunch reported that Spotify confirmed it was working on an AI playlist feature. The confirmation came after TikTok user @robdad_ posted a clip showing the option to create playlists under “Library” with a disclaimer “Powered by AI” at the bottom.

The feature has now reached the beta testing stage and is now available to Android and iOS Spotify Premium users in Australia and the UK.
