Mobile Monday: iPhone panoramas can be really good

Now, I’ll admit that I’ve been battling using my smartphone to create images. After all, I’m a professional photographer and have the right tools and kit to go with it. After a fair amount of prodding and prodding with some fellow pros, I found a place in my bag to put my iPhone as just another tool.

push

What got me going was seeing cell phone images created by fellow pros like Rick Sammon, Scott Kelby, Terry White, Russell Brown, and many others. Then came the final push. As a Platypod Pro, I’m on a mission to show you the best and most creative ways to use this gear. Larry Tiefenbrun came up with another kit called the Platypod Grip. This is an advanced phone holder/mount with additional ports for attaching lights, microphones, and additional gear when working with your iPhone.

Moving forward, Grip was sent to show some interesting ideas. Well, I was way back in the stone age when it came to camera systems, so I needed to upgrade my iPhone first. Maybe that’s why I was slow to move on. The latest generation of camera phones has been significantly improved. I switched to iPhone 14 Pro.

Creating panoramic images using iPhone 14 Pro

Larry asked me to show him how he could utilize the Grip and Platyball Elite to create more powerful panoramas. This is skinny. Even if you use your iPhone handheld, you can create panoramic photos without any major issues. If your hands are steady and you can move the arrow along the indicated line, you’ll be fine. What I discovered was that if you don’t follow the lines perfectly, you can end up with blank spaces in your panoramic images.

I always share that when creating panoramic images, you get better results if you rotate around the camera’s sensor or hold the camera in front of you, rather than around the lens. I did. For more information on the main camera, please see this article. The Platyball Elite has a built-in spirit level between the camera and the tripod. Once leveled, the built-in rotation device moves the camera horizontally from one side to the other. This allows you to easily set up your iPhone camera to accurately track panoramic lines. When I installed the iPhone, I offset it so that the camera was centered on the pivot point.

I was knocked out by the result. Head to Sedona’s wetlands to photograph wildlife. I thought the reflection of the clouds and grass was very pleasant. There was still something missing in creating a straight image. I set up my iPhone on Grip and Elite to create a completely different version of the scene. Once I set up the camera, it was easy to rotate it according to the recommended lines.

This is the Platyball Elite’s slightly offset grip. Is this completely necessary? Maybe not, but I always follow best practices.

tlaquepaque panorama

Architecture takes on a completely different and interesting look when photographed as a panorama. This is Patio del Norte in the village of Tlaquepaque in Sedona, Arizona. Tlaquepaque is a wonderful place to visit when visiting the area.

Panoramic images can also be created vertically (also known as bartrama). Once the camera is attached, simply flip the Elite onto its side. Activate and utilize the level to start your vertorama business. Larry wanted me to see Bertrama’s Extreme. She creates photos from the front, overhead, and back. This setup worked as well. We built one Vertrama in a small, intimate chapel. Another piece was created in an outdoor courtyard, displaying fountains and amazing architecture and arches.

thought

I have no intention of parting with my OM System camera for my main job, but I have added a new tool to my quiver. As one of my mentors suggested, “The right tool for the right job!” That being said, the iPhone 14 Pro is a new tool. Jay Maisel says, “Always carry a camera with you. It’s hard to take pictures without one.”

Now I almost always carry a decent camera with me.

Thanks for your creative photos, Bob.
