Wes Streeting said Labor “must come up with a funding plan for social care” but refused to commit to putting it in the party’s general election manifesto.
The shadow health secretary was repeatedly asked whether Labor would include detailed plans for how social security would be paid in its manifesto.
He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: “We’ll have more to say about that in the not-too-distant future…”
Asked again if that would be included in the manifesto, he said: “We will include social care in the manifesto.”
Asked again about specific funding issues, Streeting said: “This morning you are tempting me to present the Labor Party’s manifesto on the Today show. I will resist that temptation.
“In direct answer to your question, I think I have clearly stated why we have been failing for over 10 years and that yes, we have to develop a funding plan for social care.
“We also have to develop a different kind of politics around social care in the long term.”
He added: “We hope that the next Labor government will not only provide answers to the immediate crisis in social care, but also build consensus across divides and set out a long-term direction for investment and reform that can be sustained over the long term. I look forward to it,” he added. For generations, as we did with the NHS in 1948. ”
