Earthquake hits New York City area as man undergoes vasectomy on Friday

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the New Jersey region Friday morning, catching the East Coast by surprise.

Many people took to social media to discuss how they were unprepared and surprised by the shaking, but one man may top them all. After all, he was in the middle of a vasectomy when the shaking started.

Justin Allen of Horsham, Pennsylvania, was attending a scheduled appointment at Huntingdon Valley Urological Health and Surgery Center when he felt the entire room begin to shake mid-surgery.

Justin Allen of Horsham, Pa., was in a rather unusual position when the New Jersey earthquake struck, wiping out his urology clinic.

“The surgeon froze up and we all seemed a little confused,” he told USA TODAY. Allen initially thought the shaking was a common occurrence, caused by either a passing train or some sort of problem with the building itself. It was only when the doctor said something that he realized it might be Mother Nature.

“Even when the surgeon said, ‘It must be an earthquake,’ I thought he was kidding,” he says.

Allen said the doctor was right in the middle of the quake when it happened, and everyone involved took a short break after the shaking subsided. After everything calmed down, he said, everyone couldn’t help but laugh.

“It was an experience none of us will ever forget,” he said. “Everything went smoothly and we were able to complete the process, but it was something that made us laugh the whole time afterwards.”

“Clear and obvious signs”

After the surgery, Allen picked up his phone and sent the now-viral post to X (formerly Twitter), thinking some of his friends would see it and laugh. Instead, his posts are now viewed by more than 3.2 million people, and that number continues to grow.

“Many of the initial reactions made me laugh, but I was so overwhelmed that I had to mute the notifications,” he said. “There were definitely a lot of inappropriate jokes…but in general, it was mostly funny replies and quotes.”

After sending out an initial post that simply said, “There was an (expletive) earthquake in the middle of my vasectomy,” his wife Bridget Allen responded on her own account and posed outside the clinic. She then posted a photo of her husband posing with everyone giving a thumbs up and smiling. .

What lessons did the couple learn from their experience?

“My wife says, ‘This is a clear sign that we shouldn’t have any more children,'” Allen said.
