As predicted, Apple has released the first developer beta software for iOS 17.5, the next big iPhone release. And it was soon made available as a public beta as well. There are a lot of changes coming in the coming weeks leading up to the final release, but the first signs are that there’s a lot to look forward to. Here’s what we know:

App installation updates

As part of its response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Apple is opening up the iPhone to alternative markets. iOS 17.5 will likely introduce a mechanism to accomplish this.

Apple previously said: “Web distribution, available in a software update later this spring, will enable certified developers to distribute iOS apps directly to EU users from developer-owned websites.” First developer beta and public The beta version seems to be laying the groundwork for that.

This update allows users in the EU to install apps from the developer’s website. It will not be enabled in downloadable apps until the general release of the software in May.

Apple will also provide a set of APIs for developers to integrate with system features.

rogue tracker

Find My has been updated to make it easier to find trackers who are following you without your knowledge. You can read all about it here. This appears to be in sync with Google introducing its own Find My Network, with both Apple and Google collaborating on a joint industry specification.

The new detail is that the iPhone will be able to recognize trackers that aren’t certified by Apple, which is not the case at this time.

small redesign

iOS 17.5 has several redesigned elements, including a Podcasts widget that dynamically changes colors. Similarly, the icons for web browser passkey access in the Books and Settings apps have also been tweaked. Craig Federighi says: “We truly live in a time of wonder.”

Others

There have been changes to mobile device management, and according to MacRumors, “Starting with iOS 17.5 Beta, MDM solutions can now force iOS beta versions during automatic device enrollment.”

There seems to be a hint in the iPadOS 17.5 beta released at the same time that battery health will be in the iPad menu in the coming weeks. And it seems that the existence of a new Apple Pencil was accidentally revealed in the same beta version. Click here for details.

We’ll be checking in to see what other nuggets the beta reveals.
