According to WHO, this theme aims to promote the right to access health services, education and information for everyone, everywhere. It also focuses on freedom from discrimination from all sectors of society.

As we approach this important day, it is imperative that we prioritize our health and take proactive steps to protect our overall health. Strengthening your immune system is key to preventing disease and promoting overall health.

World Health Day 2024: 5 golden rules to improve your overall health

  1. Balanced diet: Fuel your body with a variety of nutritious foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Incorporating a rainbow of colors on your plate ensures you’re getting a variety of vitamins and minerals that support your immune system.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or underweight can affect your body’s immune system. Aim for a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and exercise. Exercise not only helps with weight management, but it also directly benefits your immune health.
  3. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol: Smoking damages your immune system and makes you more susceptible to infections. Quitting smoking is a powerful step towards improving your immune system. If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. Excessive alcohol intake weakens the immune system.
  4. Stress management: Chronic stress can weaken your body’s immune system and make you more susceptible to illness. Practice stress reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, exercise, yoga, and spending time in nature. Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily life can reduce stress and support immune health.
  5. Prioritize sleep: Quality sleep plays an important role in immune health. Aim for at least 7 to 9 hours of continuous sleep each night so your body can rest and recharge. To improve your sleep quality, limit screen time in bed, create a dark and calm sleep environment, and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
