Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone 16 bezels could be ruined by manufacturing complexities

Apple is expected to announce iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro devices later this year, and we’re hearing that at least some models will feature ultra-thin bezels. The change is also expected to apply to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, but a new report on the subject just says iPhone 16. It’s unclear if it’s just a misunderstanding or if all four new iPhones will benefit from this change. This year I’m switching it up. In any case, the news regarding the new bezel is not entirely encouraging.

According to a report from The Elec, Apple’s supply chain is struggling with new Border Reduction Struction (BRS) technology used to further shrink bezels. In fact, the report claims that so far no company has been able to produce a display to Apple’s satisfaction.

The new BRS technology has made the bottom bezel especially thinner. This is achieved by packing the circuitry under the display more tightly and bending some of the wires in the process. This is believed to be causing some problems for supply partners, with LG Display and Samsung Display currently struggling. Both companies are familiar with Apple, the iPhone, and the required standards, but so far have struggled to meet them.

Such technology has historically been problematic due to the heat generated by the display and the potential for overheating. However, Apple and its partners are believed to have been able to solve that problem by using new heat dissipation technology.

Notably, the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a new 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a new 6.7-inch display, up from the previous 6.7-inch/6.9-inch display on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16. It is expected to come with a 6.9-inch display. The iPhone 16 Plus is not expected to grow in the same way, perhaps suggesting that new display technology will not be implemented on these devices.

If Apple follows its usual release pace, we can expect it to announce new iPhones at an event in the first half of September. The company will then make the new devices available for pre-order during the week and be available for purchase the following Friday.

Apple is also expected to announce a new Apple Watch X at the same event, and a refreshed Apple Watch Ultra is also likely to be on the cards. The new wearable is likely to follow the same release pattern as the new iPhone.
