FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — How did Lexington High School senior Allison Liu describe her project for the Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair?
“I was working to redesign and improve a class of synthetic receptor proteins called Synthetic Notch that have the ability to regulate the expression of customizable, potentially therapeutic genes for applications in T-cell immunotherapy for cancer treatment,” Liu told WBZ NewsRadio.

Liu was one of over 350 high school students from across Massachusetts who took part in the fair at Gillette Stadium on Friday. Students presented more than 280 projects on topics ranging from cancer research and climate change to robotics and car accidents.

“We have come a long way from the volcano,” said MSEF Executive Director Helen Rosenfeld. “These are the things that they really care about, and what’s marvelous to see is that many of them are picking big social issues to address.”
The student who came in first place won $10,000, while the top 15 earned a spot at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles in May.
As for the middle school science whizzes, they will get a chance to show off their projects at Worcester Technical High School on May 11th.
