Retro emulation on smartphones has long been limited to Android devices, due to Apple’s somewhat strict policies regarding what apps can and cannot be distributed in the App Store.
But that’s about to change. Apple has announced that retro emulators will be allowed on iPhones. However, such apps still have to comply with “all applicable laws”, so don’t expect such emulators to come with preloaded games.
This move seems aimed at countering the fact that iPhone users in the European Union can now use third-party app stores on their devices thanks to a recent legal ruling. Apple seems to want to give European customers the chance to sample a wider range of apps in the official App Store, avoiding the problem of looking elsewhere.
It remains to be seen which emulators will make the jump to the iPhone, but we imagine developers who already have successful emulators on Android will port them to Apple’s phones.
Previously, iPhone users had to jailbreak if they wanted to emulate retro games on their device, but Apple didn’t look upon this process favorably.
