(WHTM) – So you bought a new iPhone, or your old one broke and your provider sent you a replacement. But how do you know if that new phone is really new?
When you spend $1,000 on an iPhone, it’s tempting to think it’s new and no one has used it for a year or two.
But according to recent reports from the Daily Mail, How-To-Geek, and other sites, every iPhone has a secret code built into it that lets you know whether the phone is new or used. All are listed in the model number.
To check, go to Settings and then General and you will see everything about your phone. Look for the model, especially the letters before the model number.
- “M” means it was a brand new phone when you activated it.
- “F” means refurbished and first used by others.
- “N” means it is a replacement device for a failed phone.
But the files stink, so even if you buy a new phone, you’ll end up buying a used one.
Apple’s forums are full of complaints from people who say similar things happened when they bought discounted phones from third-party sellers. Additionally, if it is refurbished by an independent repair shop, it may not have an Apple warranty.
Therefore, please check the secret code number with the seller before purchasing.
Apple reminds customers that all certified refurbished phones come with a one-year warranty, so you’re getting a great deal and don’t waste your money.
