VSU hosts Science Saturday

Valdosta State University’s School of Science and Mathematics and Department of Biology will host Science Saturday: Tree of Life from 9 a.m. to noon April 13 at the Hugh C. Bailey Science Center.

Science Saturday: Tree of Life is a fun and educational opportunity for community members to explore the scientific study of life. Participants of all ages can learn about jumping lizards, crawling snakes, frog acoustics, seahorse fossils, plant pigment chromatography, and more. They enjoy a seed scavenger hunt, play with betta fish, and find out if plants are stressed.

Science Saturday is supported by VSU’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Initiative and is part of an ongoing effort to inspire the next generation to learn more about these subject areas. Faculty in the School of Science and Mathematics understand that the nation’s future economic prosperity is inextricably linked to student success in his STEM fields.

Educators across the country and at VSU are working to improve STEM instruction for students from preschool through age 12.^th improve grades, increase and sustain public and youth engagement in STEM, improve undergraduate STEM experiences at the university level, better serve groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields, and improve future Designing graduate education for the STEM workforce.

Science Saturday activities are free and open to the public. Parking is available in any parking lot around the main campus, but the most convenient parking is along Georgia Avenue between Oak Street and Patterson Street. His VSU parking permit is not required for this event.

Science Saturday: Tree of Life marks the end of VSU’s spring Science Saturday calendar. We will resume our activities in the fall.
