update: WhatsApp fixes issues that cause outages. Article has been updated to reflect the latest information.

What you need to know

  • WhatsApp Messenger has been down for most users around the world since 2pm ET today, and the company said it is working to resolve the issue.
  • Meta’s outage page states that these interruptions were caused by an issue with an “on-premises” API and also affected Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
  • Whatsapp Messenger is gradually being restored as users are reporting connectivity.

WhatsApp Messenger went down for thousands of users on Wednesday, April 3, Reuters reported. However, after several hours, the company was finally able to fully restore service to users.

The outage, which started around 2pm ET today, affected WhatsApp users around the world. Users reported issues connecting to WhatsApp in several countries, where the app would get stuck in a “connecting” state. For some, WhatsApp allowed users to send messages. However, those messages were not delivered.

Shortly after reports poured in, the messaging app’s official X account posted a message saying the team was working to get things back on track as soon as possible.

According to Downdetector, more than 23,000 users reported the outage in the United States. In contrast, data shows that in India more than 20,000 users have reported problems with the platform, in the United Kingdom about 46,000 and in Brazil more than 42,000 users have reported problems with the platform.

Meta’s outage page states that there is a “significant interruption” in service for the app’s “on-premises API.” The issue began around 2:10 p.m. ET. However, the page states that all issues have been resolved and service has been restored.

WhatsApp wasn’t the only app dealing with the outage, as some users reported experiencing issues with Instagram and Facebook Messenger, which started around the same time. Meta’s outage page attributes these interruptions to the same ongoing issue.
