Google may be working on a beta version of its Google Messages app that will support satellite messaging, following in the footsteps of Apple, which already has a similar feature.
Within the beta version of Google Messages, version 20240329_01_RC00, 9to5Google pointed out the following text string indicating the upcoming emergency messaging feature:

“When transmitting and receiving, please do so outdoors with a clear view of the sky.”

“Satellite messaging can be time-consuming and cannot include photos or videos.”

“You can message anyone, including emergency services.”
It’s called Apple’s version of satellite messaging. Emergency SOS by satelliteallows you to send a text message to emergency services or roadside assistance if you don’t have cell phone or Wi-Fi coverage, or if you can’t dial 911. It seems like Google’s implementation may work similarly to Apple’s.
If the strings above actually work, what’s unique about Google’s version of satellite messaging is that it appears you can send messages not only to emergency services, but also to others in your contacts. Theoretically, in an emergency, you could send messages via satellite to emergency services or your friends and family so they know what’s going on.
We’ll likely learn more about this potential new feature in the coming months, as Android 15 is likely to be released in the fall, coinciding with the launch of the Google Pixel 9 series.
