iPhone 16 Pro will skip iPhone 16 Pro Max — here’s why

For years, the iPhone Pro Max has topped regular iPhone Pro models on our list of best phones. You get a bigger screen and a bigger battery for a more immersive viewing experience and longer battery life. And last year, the iPhone 15 Pro Max ignored the existence of the iPhone 15 Pro by offering its own 5x tetraprism zoom lens, compared to just 3x on the regular Pro.

The good news is that the iPhone 16 Pro should level the playing field this year in more ways than one. First, the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature the same powerful zoom as the Pro Max model. So you’ll be able to focus on subjects from a distance and enjoy the same 25x digital zoom. The iPhone 15 Pro has a maximum magnification of just 15x, which pales in comparison to the best Android smartphones.

Another big upgrade to this year’s iPhone 16 Pro is a rumored larger display. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.1-inch to 6.3-inch screen. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also expected to be even bigger, growing from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. But even if rumors get around that the bezels will be thinner, I think that might be overkill for me.

As someone who has to wear reading glasses anyway (sigh), I think the 6.3-inch OLED panel is more than enough. And while I like the idea of having a phone that takes up even less space in your pocket, Apple developed a lighter and more compact titanium phone last year with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Otherwise, the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have all the same features as the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This includes the new A18 Pro chip with improved performance, a new capture button for photos and videos, and tons of generative AI features coming to iOS 18.

So what about battery life? That’s my only real worry. The iPhone 15 Pro Max lasted an epic 14 hours in Tom’s Guide battery test with continuous web surfing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness. This was enough to make our list of best battery life for mobile phones. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, clocked just 10:53 in this test.

The good news is that the iPhone 16 Pro’s increased size means it may also have a larger battery. The flagship model is expected to have a capacity of 3,355mAh compared to 3,274mAh on the iPhone 15 Pro. Assuming that the A18 Pro chip is also more efficient, we can easily see the iPhone 16 Pro last more than his 12 hours in our tests.

Overall, I’m optimistic that the iPhone 16 Pro is good enough to be my next flagship. Something like the iPhone 16 Pro Max mini. And if Apple keeps the price difference the same, you could get virtually all of Max’s features for $200 less.
