LINCOLN, Nebraska – Guthrie has been named a 2023 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management.
Guthrie earned Tree City USA certification by meeting the program’s four requirements. These include maintaining a tree committee or department, enacting a tree protection ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per person, and hosting an Arbor Day event and proclamation.
The Arbor Day Foundation sponsors the Tree City USA program in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
“Tree City USA communities are seeing first-hand the positive effects of urban forests,” said Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The trees Guthrie plants and cares for ensure that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life. Additionally, participating in this program brings residents together through volunteerism and public education. It creates a sense of civic pride.”
If ever there was a time for trees to grow, now is it. Communities around the world face challenges such as air quality, water resources, personal health and well-being, energy use, extreme heat and flooding. Guthrie is doing its part to address these challenges for current and future residents.
