Call it a long-awaited makeover, but the latest leaks indicate that big changes are in store for the iPhone SE 4’s design. A 4th generation iPhone SE dummy unit leaked by a Weibo user reveals that the cheapest phone in Apple’s lineup may feature a more modern design based on the iPhone 14. became.
More than two years have passed since the iPhone SE (2022) was released. This gave Apple a more budget-friendly option than more expensive options like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. But considering all the stiff competition we see among the best cheap phones out there, it’s hard to believe that the two-year-old iPhone SE (2022) will beat out the Nothing Phone 2a, OnePlus 12R, and Samsung Galaxy A35.
A leaked iPhone SE 4 dummy unit is garnering some much-needed attention for Apple, following renders we saw last month that purportedly showed off a refreshed design. Given that reports of the iPhone Flip indicate it will be much later than that, Apple may be able to devote more time to developing the foldable phone if the iPhone SE 4 is released first. unknown. Here’s what we can infer from this dummy unit:
Goodbye Touch ID, hello Face ID
The iPhone SE 4 dummy is a clearer indication that Apple will eventually ditch Touch ID from the iPhone completely, as the image shows a clear cutout in the notch at the top of the display. The notch includes a cutout for the IR illuminator and camera used to activate Face ID, and this also means the bezels along the bottom of the phone are significantly thinner. At the same time, this forces previous and current iPhone SE owners to adopt new gestures to access Control Center.
This major design change could also pave the way for another new feature: Dynamic Islands. Previous rumors hinted at the possibility, but it’s hard to say for sure whether this leaked dummy unit will actually materialize. Dynamic islands not only deliver notifications in a more practical way, but they also help in that they include live activity.
Apple initially reserved Dynamic Island for its more expensive models, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, but later made it standard on all iPhone 15 models. It’s hard to say whether Apple will include this in the iPhone SE 4, since adding it could increase the price.
Yes, there is still one rear camera
We’re excited that Apple may expand spatial video recording by bringing it to more iPhone 16 models, but it looks like the iPhone SE 4 won’t be on that list. That’s because the dummy unit still has a single cutout on the back, reserved for a single camera and LED flash. (Spatial video requires both a main lens and an ultra-wide camera to capture video at the same time.)
This omission is difficult, as other budget phones have adopted dual-camera setups that are becoming more common, but the iPhone SE 4 has the potential to effectively give telephoto capabilities. It is said to have a larger 48MP camera. Leveraging pixel binning to achieve optical quality with 2x zoom has already been seen on the iPhone 15’s main camera, so Apple may do the same with the iPhone SE 4.
The mute switch remains the same.
And finally, the dummy unit also reveals the left edge of the phone, which includes a cutout for the volume control and possibly the mute switch. Apple effectively removed this button from the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max and replaced it with the action button, but it’s unlikely that Apple will introduce this new button to the iPhone SE 4.
At the same time, it seems that the iPhone SE 4 will not have a capture button either. So far, there are rumors that this feature will be available on all iPhone 16 models. It’s actually placed on the same side as the power button and could function as a camera launcher or an on-screen shutter for capturing photos and videos. The dummy unit doesn’t seem to have a cutout for that.
Although the second anniversary (2022) of the iPhone SE has already passed, there is still time for Apple to announce and release its cheapest iPhone. WWDC 2024 will be held from June 10th to June 14th, giving enough time for a quick release before the iPhone 16 launches later in the fall to officially announce this phone. It will be a great opportunity.
