Vilsack Announces Final Voluntary USA Label and Local Meat Subsidy
USDA Secretary Vilsack announced the final USDA meat label voluntary regulations and new local meat subsidies at the National Farmers Union’s annual meeting.
Vilsack said the rule has the support of thousands of stakeholders and consumers and will go into effect in the future, with regulatory labeling guidance effective January 1, 2026.
“Made in the USA” or “Made in the USA” label claims under this rule do not require prior approval by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. However, the facility would have to have documentation on file to support that claim.
Separately, Vilsack announced that the Department of Agriculture will award $9.5 million in equipment grants to 42 projects through the Local Meat Capacity (MCap) program.
The Agricultural Marketing Service will use American Rescue Plan funds to make the grants. This is the first series of grants awarded to projects in 27 states and Puerto Rico.
