Tab management is a never-ending battle. As internet users, we always seem to have tons of tabs hanging out on our devices. Most of the time, you don’t need to go back to these tabs, you just forget to close them. Google seems to have a great solution to the problem for Chrome users, but it’s only available on Android.
The new tab management feature is called “Android Tab Declutter.” As the name suggests, it helps you remove old tabs running in the background. According to code spotted by 9To5Google, this new feature is tentatively scheduled to arrive on Android in Chrome 125, but that timing may change or the feature may never arrive. If it happens, that version will be released in his May. Like most new Chrome features, this one can be hidden behind a flag.

This feature is known to cause the browser to automatically archive or delete inactive tabs. I’m not sure if you can choose between archiving and deleting a tab, or if it’s just one or the other. However, you can make a guess based on the code. It appears that tabs are first archived when they become inactive, and then you choose to restore or delete them in the new feature options.
Whether you’re worried about your phone’s memory consumption or just want to keep your tabs organized, this feature can be very useful. Hopefully, Google will bring this feature to iOS at some point, but for now, it’s a great update that makes keeping tabs on track much less difficult for Android users.
The usefulness of Android Tab Declutter depends on how Google implements it. If done incorrectly, tabs that you want to keep open can always be archived. If the timing is right and the feature is intelligent, it can be a game-changer in dealing with large amounts of tabs on Android.
Thankfully, Android Tab Declutter should be able to be turned on or off, so if it gets annoying or starts closing tabs faster than you’d like, you can simply remove it.
