‘We haven’t seen a situation like this since 1945’: Polish prime minister warns Europe has entered ‘pre-war era’

NEW DELHI: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a warning underscoring the imminent threat of conflict in Europe, saying the continent has entered a “pre-war period” for the first time since World War II.

“War is no longer a concept of the past. It’s a reality, and it started more than two years ago. What worries me most at the moment is literally war,” Tusk said in an interview with European media group LENA on Friday. That’s what’s going to happen.” The scenario is possible. We haven’t seen anything like this since 1945.”

“I know this sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun, the pre-war era. Without exaggeration, it is becoming more and more obvious every day. “It’s coming,” he added. .

Adding to the anxiety is the possibility that former US President Donald Trump, whose skepticism towards NATO has raised questions about the reliability of US military aid, will return if he is re-elected in November. It is an outlook.

“No matter who the president of the United States is, our job is to foster the transatlantic relationship,” Tusk said.

Donald Trump continued his attacks on foreign aid in February, warning NATO allies that Russia would “encourage” “delinquent” countries to “do whatever they want.” Ta.

“No, I won’t protect you. In fact, I’ll encourage them to do whatever they want. You have to pay. You have to pay the bills.” said the former US president.

Expanding

Mr. Tusk’s concerns stem from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago, which shattered the postwar peace that European leaders had long taken for granted. This destabilizing event prompted many European countries to support Ukraine and increase production of weapons to strengthen their own militaries.

The former European Council president, who has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, warned that European security would be at risk if Kiev fell. Tusk said if Kiev were to lose, “no one” in Europe would be safe.
