The iPhone 16 is widely expected to feature a vertically arranged camera on the back, possibly to enable spatial video recording. Newly leaked images today give us another look at this design, showing one of the first iPhone 16 cases.
iPhone 16’s new camera bump design
Image shared on social media This week written by Sonny Dixon. You can see the new camera cutout, which is clearly designed for the iPhone 16’s vertically oriented camera. The case was likely created based on schematic files circulating in his Apple supply chain ahead of the release of his iPhone 16 later this year.
Currently, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use a camera layout where the main camera lens and ultra-wide camera lens are diagonally aligned. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to be able to record spatial videos by switching to a vertically aligned design.
The new layout is similar to the camera bump layout in the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 camera layouts. Apple has updated the design of the 2021 iPhone 13 to a diagonal design.
The changes to the iPhone 16’s camera layout match similar changes Apple made to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max last year. Apple has adjusted the layout of the three iPhone 15 Pro camera lenses so that the main camera and ultra-wide camera overlap each other. This change allows iPhone 15 Pro to record Vision Pro spatial videos.
