Ski season extended: Resorts extend operations to cater to late-season enthusiasts as snowfall soars

  • Global snowfall: Fresh snow has fallen across North America, Europe, and Japan, creating excellent skiing conditions.
  • Extended season: Recent snowfall has caused many ski resorts to extend their seasons, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy skiing well into April and beyond.
  • Various conditions: Rising temperatures may cause snow to melt on lower slopes, but the higher elevations will continue to experience powder days and excellent skiing conditions.

World overview:

Lots of fresh snow has fallen from coast to coast in North America. Heavy snow fell in many parts of Japan and Europe, and temperatures dropped and snowfall was observed. However, this is the end of March rather than mid-January, so the lower levels of the slopes will continue to have warm temperatures and the snow will melt, but the upper levels may still experience powder days.
Many ski resorts in the Northern Hemisphere end their 23rd-24th season over one of the next three weekends, but hundreds continue into late April. Thanks to recent snowfall, more people are announcing season extensions.
There are still about 10 weeks until the start of the 2024 season, but expectations are high. Snow was reported in parts of New Zealand’s highlands last week, and ski resorts in Australia reported nighttime lows below freezing last weekend. Cardrona in New Zealand then reported decent cover down to resort level on Wednesday 27th March.

Voss, Scandinavia: March 24, 2024.

introduction to europe

In the Alps, it was like winter was back, at least in the highlands, with lots of fresh snow. However, even though it was the end of March, it often rained on the way down the mountain. In fact, we have experienced different situations. There was an overnight freezer, gusty winds, low clouds and flat light that obscured visibility, and even a period of beautiful, sunny weather to enjoy the fresh snow. This combination of weather conditions led to the cancellation of the final men’s World Cup downhill race in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, on Sunday. They reported that there was 15 centimeters (6 inches) of fresh snow at the summit at the start of the day, rain at the base of the course, and poor visibility, making it unsuitable for World Cup high-speed running. Snowfall is widespread and skiing is possible. Across Eastern Europe, the Alps, Pyrenees and Scandinavia have all seen temperatures drop and snow showers fall over the past few days.

austria report

There are actually two extreme weather conditions in Austria, with lower centers fighting to keep runways open as maximum temperatures in the valley rise towards +20 degrees in the afternoon, and at 2,000 meters above sea level. It is an order of magnitude taller, surpassing the highest lifts of some of the larger lifts in the country. region. However, excellent conditions continue on the country’s glaciers and other high-altitude areas, and the season on the Melthaler Glacier has been extended by three weeks until June 16th. New snow continues to fall on the glacier, and as the snow in the valleys melts, the depth of the glacier floor continues to increase. Skiveld, one of the country’s largest ski resorts, has less than half of its slopes currently open, but it’s the last weekend of the season there.

Saalbach, Austria: March 25, 2024.

austria weather forecast

The weather continues to be changeable. The maximum temperature in the valley is +10℃ at 1,000m, +5℃ at 2,000m, and below freezing at 3,000m. Heavy snow is expected over the next few days, with rain expected on lower slopes and many sunny days.

swiss report
The weather in Swiss resorts continued to be unstable throughout the week, with many sunny days and high temperatures melting snow in valleys, while snow piling up on glaciers and plateaus and falling as rain in valleys. Thus Larks (0/461cm/0/184 inch) is one of the deepest upper slope bases in the world, even though a week ago he lost cover in the last valley where he was 10cm (4 inches). I went back to recording one. Of course, that’s normal in the spring, and really it’s just a case of keeping the highlands open until the closing date, when they are expected to start arriving en masse after the weekend after Easter. But for now, most large areas remain 70-95% open. His four gorges (20/290cm/8/116in) around Verbier have the highest number of gorges in the country, with 85% of the 350km/run available during Christmas week.

Switzerland weather forecast

The forecast for the rest of the week is for heavy precipitation, with snow near 1600 meters and rain below.

Snow is expected to fall in Switzerland over the next 6 to 9 days.

france report

It’s been quite a rollercoaster of weather in the French mountains this past week, with temperatures dropping to near freezing in the lowlands and snow over the weekend, but sunshine has returned and temperatures are well above freezing in the valleys. So the temperature has returned to double digits. It’s 2000 meters again so it really made for a lot of different situations. Well, it’s spring. However, now that Easter has begun for the second time in two weeks, most of the terrain is still open in most parts of France, the usual spring scenario continues, and conditions are at their best above 1800 meters (fortunately). Best of all, most of the slopes at the big, famous resorts are located there). Above 2,500 meters, conditions become the most “winter-like.” Regions of France continue to experience some of the most open terrain and deepest snow in the world, with some notices of season extensions. Brevin (10/290cm/4/116in) in the Chamonix Valley will be open for a further week until April 21st. The Company du Mont Blanc, which operates the lifts in the Chamonix Valley, announced that its Brevin ski area will remain open for an additional week after its previously planned April 14 closure, until April 21, 2024. , accessed by the Plan-Pula lift and the Parsa chairlift, and at least six slopes (Combes des Viots, Stade Geant, Blanchot, Le Tour Plan-Pula, Verte 2000 and Espace Debutante Funi 2000 slopes) remain open until the end.

Chamonix-Vallée Blanche, France: March 25, 2024.

france weather forecast

Light to moderate snowfall is expected on higher slopes for the remainder of this week, with the heaviest snowfall likely in the southern French Alps, with snow expected over the next 36 hours. The rain will taper off later in the week and we’ll see some sunshine. Temperatures will reach +10°C in the valley, leading to rain and rapid melting of snow at lower elevations.

italy report

In Italy, too, temperatures in the valleys are very high, with snow, sleet and rain falling at lower elevations. As such, lowland areas are struggling to maintain cover, while highland areas continue to maintain excellent conditions. Cervinia (0/250 cm / 0/100 in) has some of the most open terrain in the country, or at least in Italy, with much of its 195 km (172 mi) run crossing a seamless border with Zermatt, Switzerland. I’m bored.

Madonna di Campiglio, Italy: March 24, 2024.

italy weather forecast

Snowfall will be moderate, with higher slopes likely to see snow totals of 0.5 meters (20 inches) by the end of the week. There is plenty of sun and temperatures in the valley are warm, leading to rain in the lower regions.

germany report

After one of the worst seasons on record, only six German ski resorts (about 1.5% of the total number of ski resorts in the country) are open for the Easter holiday weekend, with only six ski resorts still open. Most have a thin base and some open terrain. Most German centers are low-lying compared to the alpine Alps to the south, so mild temperatures and rain showers continue to be the main problem. The Garmisch Classic (0/145cm/0/58in) no longer offers some of its terrain and is now down to his 65% of the area, so he is one, although they have reduced the price. The Zugspitze (145/291cm / 58/116 inches) is open until early May and is in great conditions thanks to its altitude. Oberstdorf (40/138cm/16/55 inches) remains at his 100% open.

Zugspitze, Germany: March 25, 2024.

germany weather forecast

The next few days will be sunny and quite dry. Temperatures in the valley are +15 °C with continued snowmelt, and on the higher slopes they reach below freezing at night, but in the afternoon they reach +5 °C.

Snow is forecast for the next 3 to 6 days in Germany.

scandinavia report

Just as the rest of Europe is getting warmer, Scandinavian ski areas continue to experience cold and snowy weather. Much of the snowfall reported in Europe by the weekend had fallen in Norway or Sweden, with one of the big winners being the Myrkdalen (120/160cm/48/64in) ski area near Voss on Norway’s west coast. According to a report on the 20th, it had grown by 8 inches (cm) in the 24 hours leading up to the weekend, and another 40 cm (16 inches) earlier this week. Geiro (100/150cm / 40/60 inches) was just a few centimeters lower, and Roldal (120/170cm / 48/68 inches) was also a good position down.

Roldal, Scandinavia: March 21, 2024.

Scandinavian weather forecast

Light to moderate snowfall is expected for most of Scandinavia for the rest of this week, with 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6 inches) expected on most days. It will be dry by the end of the week, but will remain cloudy.

scotland report

The Scottish ski season continues to walk its usual tightrope, and the start of this week may have been a little better than last weekend. Gales closed the Cairngorms high-altitude slopes and Glencoe announced it had to close due to melting snow, but reopened on Sunday after the weekend’s cold snap and fresh snow improved conditions. But in Cairngorm’s case, the cable car is not running and skiing to the top of the mountain requires a 30-minute hike, the pair say. Then what is available is only suitable for both mountain experts. Lecht, Glenshee and Cairngorm also continue to offer beginner skiing on slopes maintained by the base’s all-weather snowmaking system. Glencoe uses the equivalent for sledding, but with dry slopes and snow patches for lessons. The Nevis Mountains are unable to offer snowsports at this time.

Glencoe, Scotland: March 26, 2024.

scotland weather forecast

The next week is looking very promising. More cold weather and snow showers are expected, but hopefully there will be enough to preserve the existing snow and keep natural snow trails open.

Spain/Andorra report

The past week has seen the return of the warm, sunny weather that has dominated much of the Pyrenean winter. The maximum temperature in the valley was +20 °C, and in the afternoon it reached +10 °C on the higher slopes, but at least now it is spring and quite normal for this time of year. Since the beginning of this week, it has gotten even colder and the snow has increased. However, the base remains in excellent condition throughout the season, and is now in Andorra’s Grand Valira (100/180cm / 40/72in), the largest area in the region including the Pas de la Casa and Soldeu ski slopes. had a base of over 70%. The terrain / 160km (100 miles) of slopes opens this week.

Spain/Andorra Forecast

Most resorts experience rain, snow, and sunshine throughout the week. Accumulations of 5-10 cm (2-4 in) on high slopes and below freezing he move between 1000 m and 2200 m in a 24-hour cycle.

Snow is forecast for the next 3-6 days in Spain/Portugal.

Bulgaria/Romania report

The situation is mixed in southeastern Europe, where warmer weather has melted snow in low-lying areas, but fresh snow has been reported higher up. As a result, the depth of Bansko’s lower base (0/170cm / 0/68 inch) is reduced to zero, and the famous long “road” from the ski area back to the resort base is only reported to be in “excellent condition”. Ta. A few days ago, it was closed for the season.

Bulgaria/Romania Forecast

With mostly dry and sunny skies, temperatures in the valley could reach +20°C by Easter Sunday, but are now about half that. On higher slopes with freeze-thaw conditions, nighttime minimum temperatures are still just below zero degrees Celsius.

Snow is forecast for the next 6-9 days in Bulgaria/Romania.

Czech Republic/Slovakia Report

In Jasna, the weather has remained cold enough to restart snowmaking systems overnight, and the past week has been the best in March so far in the Tatras, with mostly sunny skies. However, the spring thaw continues to take its toll on the lower slopes, reducing the region’s ski slopes to only about 10%. The better known Highlands area remains open over Easter.

Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic: March 25, 2024.

Czech Republic/Slovakia Forecast

It looks like it will be sunny and warm again later this week. By the weekend, temperatures could reach +1°C at 1,000m and well above freezing on higher slopes. Light snow is expected to fall at altitudes above 1,500 meters by Thursday.
