The Texas Rangers hoisted the World Series championship flag for the first time in franchise history before Thursday night’s season opener against the Chicago Cubs.
The banner was dropped from a roof support above the right field seats at Globe Life Field. Shortly before that, the Commissioner’s Trophy was delivered to home plate by manager Bruce Bochy and pitcher Josh Sborz, who had the winning out in Game 5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in November.
“I want to thank you for all the support,” Bochy told fans.
Championship rings will be awarded before Game 2 of the series on Saturday night.
“I talked to the players and told them to embrace this,” said Bochy, who coached three World Series champions during his time with the San Francisco Giants. “Taste it. Not just tonight, but the next match when you get the ring. It’s going to be very difficult, so make sure you understand it.”
The Rangers won their first championship in their 52nd season in Texas and the 63rd championship overall for the franchise, which began play in 1961 as the second season of the Washington Senators.
Texas has appeared in the last two World Series, losing in five games to Bossy’s Giants in 2010 and in 2011, losing the title-clinching Game 6 with two outs and two outs, then losing in seven games. Lost to the St. Louis Cardinals.
