Immaculate Conception Catholic School held its annual Spring Science Fair on March 21st, with 36 students in grades 6-8 participating.
Kelly Pennell, a teacher at the school who organizes the event, said students show off their expertise in a chosen science topic each year. Students are given the expected standards in January and preparation takes about two and a half months.
“Students are taught the scientific method because that is the basis of scientific inquiry,” she says. “In school, you will be given time to work on your research report, with proper guidance on how to find reliable sources, write a sound report, and properly cite your sources in your bibliography. Experiments and Boards is a task that can be completed at home.”
Pennell said this year’s event “went off without incident.”
“As always, my students continue to amaze me and everyone who comes to enjoy this event,” she said. “There was everything from crystal formation and rock erosion to roller coaster loops and cookie chemical reactions. The sciences focused on the project included earth science and chemistry/physics.”
Through science fairs, she said, students learn the responsibility of working on large-scale projects and keeping them on track from start to finish, and that the benefits of doing projects include developing problem-solving skills, research skills, He said that his duties include writing reports and conducting experiments. , time management, etc.
This year’s science fair winners for each grade level are:
• 6th grade: Elora Evola, 1st place for “Pure Michigan.” Atticus Jarosz, 2nd place for “Where Did the Rock Go?” Sophie Brinker, 3rd place for “Growing Your Knowledge with Crystals”, and Lila Hoffman, honorable mention for “Eye of the Twister”.
• 7th grade: Alexis Kiley, 1st place for “At what height does the marble loop?” Sophie Brinker, 2nd place for “Lava Lamp”. Josie Peterson took third place for “Small But Powerful,” and Trevor Newcombe and David Kunkel received honorable mentions for “This Isn’t Your Everyday Toothpaste.”
