TL;DR
- Google has revealed that its Gemini Nano on-device AI model will eventually be included in the Pixel 8.
- AI models and two related features will be coming to Pixel 8 as a developer preview in the next Pixel Feature Drop.
- This news comes weeks after a Google employee claimed that Gemini Nano would not be included in the Pixel 8 due to hardware limitations.
The Pixel 8 lacked several features compared to the Pixel 8 Pro, and one of the most controversial omitted features was the Gemini Nano AI model. This on-device model powers several local AI features on Pixel 8 Pro, including Gboard’s smart reply feature.
Fortunately, Google has announced that Gemini Nano will be coming to the regular Pixel 8 as a developer preview in the next Pixel Feature Drop. The company says this AI model powers two of the Pixel 8’s features: Gboard’s Smart Reply and Recorder app overview.
Google explained the reason for the release delay in a statement:
We’ve been testing and validating this on the Pixel 8, as running large language models on smartphones with different memory specifications can provide a different user experience. We’re excited to give more enthusiasts and developers the opportunity to try Gemini Nano. Get more feedback, innovate more.
The news comes after a Google representative said on an official podcast that Gemini Nano will not be included in the Pixel 8 due to “hardware limitations.” The Pixel 8 is powered by the same Tensor G3 chipset as his Pixel 8 Pro, but with 8GB of RAM compared to the Pro model’s 12GB of RAM. Speaking of which, the Gemini Nano is also available on the regular Galaxy S24, even though it also offers 8GB of RAM.
We asked Google to clarify the availability of Gemini Nano and related features on Pixel 8, including whether users will need to install any beta software. We will update the article as soon as we hear from the company. In any case, we’re glad to hear that this feature is finally coming to the regular Pixel 8.
