It was almost going to be Mexican food day for the dining duo. That was until Livewire mentioned that an “egg roll” food truck was scheduled to move into Hernando’s home. When I heard the word food truck, my bat antennae immediately activated. I love eating food from food trucks. It’s almost always some of the best food on the planet.

The “egg roll” food truck I’m talking about is Pok Cha’s Egg Rolls. Pok Cha’s is one of those food trucks you can find everywhere. Just look it up on Facebook and you’ll see what I mean. One day at St. Jude. Pipkin Building. University of Memphis; Botanical Garden; Crosstown. Luckily, it’s located at 74 Commerce Street, also known as Hernando’s Commerce Street Market. There are quite a few of them.

So this was a complete change of plans for the Bat-family, and a welcome one. But don’t worry. We plan to review probably the last remaining Mexican restaurant in Hernando that we haven’t been to yet.

It was the first time for Livewire and I to go to Pok Cha. First of all, the concept is unique. I mean, you don’t see many egg roll food trucks. Come to think of it, this is all I know. When I think of Korean food, the first thing that comes to mind is kimchi, but I’m well aware that it’s not for me. However, you can buy kimchi fries at Pokucha. Bulgogi on the other hand was new to me. I had to look it up. Basically translated as “fire meat”. I decided to try the beef bulgogi ($20), which comes with rice, egg rolls with vegetables, and a can of soft drink. I didn’t know it already came with egg rolls, so I added the smoked chicken egg rolls ($13 for 2) to try.

Start with the egg rolls. These are definitely big egg rolls. It was filled with toppings and smoked chicken. It wasn’t as chewy as I expected, and I thought the flavor of the chicken was a little bland, but when I dipped it in what I thought was sweet and sour sauce or duck sauce, it was really delicious. I’m very interested in the taste. All in all, these are delicious tamagoyaki. The vegetable egg rolls were basically the same except for the chicken. Again, use dipping sauce.

The beef bulgogi was interesting. I really didn’t know what to expect, but it sounded good. It’s basically Korean BBQ. The beef is made by thinly slicing ripe steaks and marinating them in soy sauce, pear juice, and sesame oil. I’m not an expert on Korean food, but I thought the steak tasted a little plain. Indeed, it tasted like it had been cooked on a barbecue with added smoke, and there was also a salty sweetness, not enough flavor. It’s pricey at $20, but honestly, it’s easily enough for two people. Give Pokucha a solid 4 captives. Next time I would like to try Korean-style chicken wings.

In addition to being connoisseurs of the Butt family’s Philadelphia cheesesteaks and loaded nachos, Livewire is also an expert in loaded fries. She decided to try the beef bulgogi fries ($20). Her first thought was that there were a lot of them! The fries were cooked just right. “French fries are delicious,” said the supervillain. “At first I thought it was expensive, but the amount was enough for two people. I was so hungry.” Livewire also liked the sauce, which combines Sriracha and mayonnaise. “I really liked the sauce,” she said. “It wasn’t hot. It had more of a tangy flavor.” Although the fries had plenty of meat, Livewire thought the steak was a little chewy. “The flavor of the meat is good, but for me I don’t like my steak to be too chewy,” she said. “I’ve never done this style before, so I don’t know if it’s what it’s supposed to be.” She gives Pokucha a 4 1/2 pow. “There’s definitely something different,” she said.
