A week after the MLB season began in South Korea, baseball season has finally arrived in North America, and two games later, some shocking facts were revealed about the game’s best player, Shohei Ohtani.
The improved Dodgers, featuring two-time MVP Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, are aiming to win their first non-pandemic World Series since 1988, while the Texas Rangers, who are also spending free money, are headed by coach Bruce Bochy. He is aiming to win again as a surprise winner in his second year.
Speaking of free agent additions, the Giants made two big splashes during spring training, adding Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman and current Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. Whether they and fellow rookie Jorge Soler can provide the star power to get San Francisco back to the playoffs remains to be seen in a division with the Dodgers, aggressive Padres and last year’s pennant winners, the Diamondbacks.
Things aren’t as rosy in Oakland, where the Athletics may open their final season at the Coliseum. Alex Wood and Ross Stripling could solidify the rotation, and Zach Geloff is expected to make his first full-season breakthrough, but no one expects that to happen for the Athletics. They will be competing for 4th place in the American League West.
Here are our staff’s predictions for the 2024 MLB season.
