Samsung releases one major and two minor updates to One UI every year. The smaller ones are released about six months apart alongside Samsung’s flagship and foldable smartphones, and outweigh the larger One UI updates that accompany each new version of Android, both in download size and number of new features. is also small scale.
But with One UI 6.1, Samsung has reversed the scenario. The One UI 6.1 update has started rolling out to select Galaxy smartphones, and the download size is 3 GB. That’s as big as Android 14 and One UI 6.0 combined, and about 1 GB larger than the One UI 5.1 update.
The One UI 6.1 update brings the Galaxy AI experience to select Samsung smartphones and tablets, so it’s not too far away from the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update in terms of the number of new features.
In fact, Android and One UI updates are generally less exciting. Mobile operating systems have matured over the years, and there’s not much Google or Samsung can do to make these updates feel like the big events they once were. years ago.
But thanks to AI, One UI is exciting again. One UI 6.1 will probably be an exception, as we don’t expect Samsung to keep coming up with new ideas as innovative and unique as Galaxy AI every year, but we’ll take what we can get.
Unfortunately, Galaxy AI only applies to the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series. Samsung hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of including it on older flagships, but it’s not certain at this point.
