Millcreek students shine at Elementary Science Olympiad – The Madison Record

MADISON – Mill Creek Elementary School students shined at the Jacksonville High School Elementary School Science Olympiad 2024 Division AA.

They secured fourth place overall and earned medals for each student. His eight-member team from Mill Creek competed against 16 schools at the Regional Science Olympiad on Feb. 24.

Science Olympiad, a national nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest, and recognizing outstanding student and teacher achievement in science education. Elementary School Science Olympiad encourages classroom teachers to explore new ways to teach science.

These tournaments are interdisciplinary competitions that include a series of individual and team events. Students prepare throughout the school year.

Science Olympiad events require teamwork, group planning, and cooperation. The emphasis is on learning, participating, interacting and having fun.

Science Olympiad sponsor and STEM teacher, the late Jackie Smith, coordinated the students for the competition. Sadly, Mr. Smith recently passed away. Smith’s funeral was held on March 23 at Spry Funeral Home in Athens.

For more than 30 years, Madison students have won awards in events featured in the Olympics.

* Calculator Contest — John Kowamota, 3rd place.

* Inclement weather — First up, Peter Gouger and David Thomasson.

* Write It, Do It — Janvi Jinva and Medha Akarapu, 4th place.

* Food for Thought — John Kowamota, 2nd.

* Crash Landing — Barrett Mayer and Peter Gouger of Millcreek tied for fourth place with Auburn-area homeschoolers and Margaret Elementary School.

* A stands for Anatomy — Peter Goosier and John Kowamota, 3rd place.

* Dinosaurs and Disasters – JR Kassamma and Meda Akarapu, first.

* Geometry — John Kowamota and Peter Gouger, 2nd place.

* Going Green — Janvi Jinva and David Thomason are first.

* Infographic — Barrett Mayer and Medha Akarapu, 2nd place.

* Space Invaders — Lawrence Reid, 2nd place.

Founded in 1984, Science Olympiad is one of the nation’s premier science competitions, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to approximately 8,000 teams from all 50 states. Science Olympiad has featured his innovative STEM practices in over 450 tournaments and professional development workshops.
