Brazil and Tottenham forward Richarlison said he was ready to “give up” after suffering alarming thoughts while battling depression after the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Richarlison said he sought psychological help after the tournament, calling it “the best discovery I’ve ever made in my life.”
“Before I went to training, I wanted to go home, I wanted to go to my room, because you never know what’s going through your head,” Richarlison told ESPN Brazil. “I also went to tell my father that I was giving up.
“It’s kind of sad to talk about it like that, isn’t it? After the World Cup, what I went through, what I discovered from the people I lived with for over seven years here at home… it’s crazy.
“It’s crazy to go up to my dad, the guy who chased his dreams with me, and say, ‘Dad, I want to give up.'”
The 26-year-old was Brazil’s top scorer with three goals in four games against Qatar, but Qatar lost to Croatia on penalties and were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Brazil’s exit from the World Cup quarter-finals was a blow to Richarlison. “It’s worse than losing his family,” Richarlison said immediately after the tournament, describing the immense pressure of wearing Brazil’s number 9 shirt.
“I had just played in the World Cup and was at the peak of my game,” Richarlison continued. “I was at my breaking point, you know? I don’t know, I’m not going to talk about suicide, but there I was in a depression and I wanted to give up.
“Even though I seemed mentally strong, after the World Cup it felt like everything fell apart.
“Like it or not, I think my therapist saved me, saved my life. I was thinking nothing but crap…I searched nothing but crap on Google, All I wanted to see was the crap about death.
“All I can say today is find a psychologist. If you need a psychologist, find a psychologist. Because it’s good for you to open up like that and talk to that person. That’s why. Today [psychologist] I’m here to thank you for taking this to the world of football, to the world and off the pitch. It’s very important and whether you like it or not, it will save your life.
“I used to have this kind of prejudice. I thought it was nonsense and I thought I was crazy. There is a family history in my family where anyone who goes to a psychologist thinks they are crazy. , some people think I’m crazy. But then I realized this. “I thought it was amazing. The best discovery of my life, really the best discovery.” was.”
The forward completed a £60 million ($75.7 million) move from Everton to Spurs in July 2022.
In September, Richarlison was seen crying on the bench after being substituted during Brazil’s 5-1 win over Bolivia, saying he had “had a tumultuous time off the field”.
One of the issues that affected him was reportedly parting ways with his long-time agent Renato Velasco due to financial issues.
Richarlison has won 48 caps for Brazil, but was an absentee in both of his international matches, against England on Saturday and Spain on Tuesday.
