Google appears to be preparing to bring Gemini to Android tablets. AI is currently only available on Android smartphones. Once installed, users will have to choose between using Gemini or Google Assistant on their device. However, this restriction may not apply to tablets.
9to5Google We performed an APK teardown of the latest Google Search app and discovered a string of code that clearly reveals Google’s plans to bring Gemini to tablets. Below are the references found within the app’s code in the publication.
- Gemini handles tasks on your tablet
- If Gemini is the digital assistant on this tablet that is hosted by Google apps, it may have certain system permissions and permissions, such as the dialer, call and message logs, contacts (to stay in touch), and installed apps such as the clock. Data can be accessed. control of alarms and timers), and screen content (helps you act on it).
- Gemini is still learning, so Google Assistant may be able to help you with some tasks. Some Assistant features may not be supported.
- If “Ok Google” and Voice Match are turned on in Settings, you can talk to Voice Match or Google Assistant (whichever is active) hands-free. If “Ok Google” and Voice Match are turned on in Settings, you can talk to Voice Match or Google Assistant (whichever is active) hands-free.
This string indicates that the Gemini experience on Android tablets will be hosted within the Google app. It’s also unclear whether Google has plans to make the standalone Gemini Android app available on tablets.
9to5Google We were also able to successfully activate Gemini on a Pixel tablet and found that it was able to work alongside Google Assistant on the Slate. When docked, the tablet responds to the “Hey Google” voice prompt and launches Google Assistant instead of Gemini. This happens despite a screenshot of the setup screen showing that the assistant will be replaced by Gemini if the user opts in to use AI.

Gemini and Assistant do not yet have equivalent functionality. Pixel Tablet is primarily designed as a smart display with Assistant. As such, Google may allow users to access both Gemini and Assistant on their devices at the same time until the smart home capabilities of Gemini and Assistant are enhanced.
In addition to this, the outlet reports that the overall experience of using Gemini on the Pixel Tablet is similar to using it on the Pixel Fold. The feature hasn’t officially rolled out yet, but when it does, Google’s tablets will be the first to get it.
