Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models are different from other iPhones released to date, as the company aims to integrate AI at the system level. We previously reported that the company plans to incorporate generative AI into various utilities available on the iPhone, some of which will be limited to the iPhone 16 lineup. While the general design language of the devices remains the same, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro dummy units reveal what users can look forward to.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro dummy units highlight the standard model’s camera layout, as well as new action and capture buttons.
Images of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 dummy unit have surfaced online, showing the expected design and button layout of the device. The dummy unit confirms most of the past reports and rumors we’ve heard about the device, including a new capture button and a redesigned camera layout on the iPhone 16.
An image of an iPhone 16 dummy unit has been posted on Weibo, and at first glance, you can see that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have larger displays than the current model “Pro” iPhone. However, the same cannot be said for the standard model as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to feature the same display size.

You can clearly see that the iPhone 16 Pro is slightly larger than the iPhone 15 Pro. This means the company could slightly change the size of the chassis this year to include a larger 6.3-inch display instead of the iPhone 15 Pro’s 6.1-inch display. It was previously reported that Apple was planning to further reduce the bezel size, but the images do not reveal this aspect of the design. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display versus the current iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch, and the dummy unit shows the difference.

We can also see that Apple is planning to bring the action button from the “Pro” lineup to the standard model as well, as seen on the iPhone 16’s dummy unit. However, the action button seems to be slightly larger compared to the iPhone 15 Pro, but it remains to be seen whether Apple will change the size of the button. In addition, you can also see that the camera is placed vertically instead of diagonally. Apple seems to have hit a dead end on the design front as it continues to go full circle with the design it introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro dummy units also show that all models feature a new capture button below the device’s side button or power button. A new capture button will be available on all four models of iPhone 16 and corresponds to the device’s video recording capabilities. There’s no list of functions this button will perform, but we’ve heard so far that it will be a camera-only button.

You’ll notice that the capture button is placed at the same height as the other buttons, rather than protruding outside of the frame. The capacitive nature of the button allows for enhanced pressure-sensitive functionality similar to DSLR cameras. We will share additional information on this matter as we learn more.
