Apple has announced dates for its annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), which typically announces new updates for iPhones and other devices.
The event will be held online and in-person and is scheduled for June 10th to June 14th, and will likely announce the new iOS 18.
Companies based in Cupertino are expected Google’s Gemini to create images and write essays based on simple prompts is “in talks” to make a big AI-powered announcement.
News of chatbots being unleashed on the iPhone has sparked a backlash among Apple users, who have threatened to walk away from the tech giant because of the “woke iPhone.”
Susan Prescott, vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple, said: “We are so excited to have a great week of technology and community at WWDC24 and connect with developers from all over the world.”
“The purpose of WWDC is to share new ideas and provide innovative tools and resources that help great developers build even greater things.”
The event will be held at Apple Park, the tech giant’s headquarters and second campus building in Cupertino.
The giant ring-shaped building was one of the final products pitched by the late CEO Steve Jobs.
WWDC typically begins with a keynote announcing new operating systems for iPhones, Macs, iPads, Apple Watches, and TVs.
Owners of the newly released Vision Pro may also be able to get the update.
WWDC is an annual event held by Apple since 1983, but it wasn’t originally intended for hardware announcements.
Over the past two decades, Apple has used the conference as a major launch pad for new devices, such as the HomePod speaker in 2007 and the iPhone 4 in 2010.
Perhaps the main event on the calendar for Apple fans is the event that takes place during the first two weeks of September, when Apple introduces the new iPhone. However, his WWDC this year could be even bigger.
Apple has long promised to add AI technology to its devices, but appears to have failed to develop its own version, so AI will be front and center at WWDC.
Bloomberg reported earlier this month about a potential partnership to add more AI-powered features to Apple devices.
But Gemini has been surrounded by controversy after its image generator produced a slew of historically inaccurate photos of black Nazi soldiers and a female pope.
The chatbot’s version was also found to be full of prejudice, such as “Some women have penises” and “Not all pedophiles are bad.”
Some iPhone owners are threatening to walk away from Apple if the deal goes through, while others think it’s simply “embarrassing” that the smartphone maker had to rely on Google as its AI provider.
According to the report, the negotiations in question include Apple licensing Gemini for several new features coming to iPhone software this year, including the terms of the AI deal, branding, or how it will be implemented. He added that it has not been decided yet.
But the world will have to wait until June to find out if Apple and Google will team up.
