Kenya Judo Federation (KJF) President Shadrach Malki will contest the presidency at the African Judo Federation (AJU) Continental Annual General Meeting on May 18 in Casablanca, Morocco.

Mr Malki said his potential election to the continental committee would see Kenya benefit greatly from the projects and programs of AJU and the International Judo Federation (IJF).

“With our judokas further benefiting from scholarships and quality training, we will have a say in the management of continental affairs,” said Marchi, adding that coaches and referees will also receive pre-training and updates. He added that he would be taking a course.

Malki, who is also the First Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), said his selection will also accelerate the process of hosting the AJU Regional Development Center and the IJF Grand Slam in Nairobi.

Marchi spoke Sunday evening after the conclusion of a two-day AJU council meeting, during which several candidates used the meeting to pitch their candidacy for several positions.

A total of 25 representatives from 25 countries attended the consultative meeting, including current AJU president Thierry Siteny from Madagascar, who will be vying for another term.

“Our country has been lagging behind in judo because the focus has always been on North and West African countries, and that will definitely change,” Marchi said.

Malki revealed that Kenya could also host the Grand Slam, known as the Safari Judo Grand Slam, this year if the COVID-19 situation eases, adding that Kasarani has been appointed to facilitate the development of the stadium. It added that it is currently acquiring land. center.

If successful, the center will be the second such center in Africa after Casablanca, which is currently under construction and expected to be completed within three months.

The Grand Slam is the third most prestigious judo event after the Olympics and the World Championships.

The other five Grand Slam world cities are Judo Grand Slam Antalya (Turkey), Judo Grand Slam Paris (France), Judo Grand Slam Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Judo Grand Slam Tbilisi (Georgia), Judo Grand Slam Tel Aviv (Israel).

“We have already signed a contract with the Ministry of Sports and are going through some formalities before the land is officially handed over,” Marchi explained.

“I would like to thank Cityny and AJU for choosing Nairobi to host the Grand Slam and Development Center. It is a great honor.”

Mr Siteny said a team would be formed immediately after the general meeting in Morocco to work on ways to make the Grand Slam tournament a success in Nairobi.

“It’s not just a Kenyan issue, it’s a pan-African issue as the Grand Slam enters Africa for the first time,” explained Sitteny, adding that Kenya and Africa will be part of the prestigious tournament, which involves 160 countries. He added that he has the ability to hold the event.
