What you need to know

  • Google has confirmed that it has begun testing the ability to access AI overviews in search for unregistered SGE users.
  • The company said it is keen to gather feedback from the public on where its generative AI needs to be improved.
  • Google introduced an introduction to AI into its main Android app through Lens in January, and newly appointed head of search Liz Reid said she wants to bring more AI into the engine.

Google is reportedly expanding its SGE testing to include US users who have not signed up for the beta environment.

According to SearchEngineLand, users who aren’t in Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) environment are also noticing new AI features (via 9to5Google ). Search users who don’t use SGE will quickly notice what AI is all about when they run a query through the engine.

Google confirmed to the publication that it is “starting with a set of queries where we think generative AI will be particularly useful.” The company added expanded generative AI testing. It targets complex questions of a user, prompting the AI to scrutinize multiple sources on his web.

Google commented that the purpose of expanding the test was to gather feedback from the public.

The company says it is “confident” that the value and quality that SGE capabilities deliver will benefit end users. Furthermore, these AI summaries may not be widely visible to the majority of his Google search users.

Google is testing several variations of the generated AI experience, but only a “small percentage” of U.S. users will see it. 9to5 added that this test includes people who are not signed in to Google.

Google launched Search Labs in May 2023, and its test environment introduced a number of generative AI features that users can playtest. One notable feature was the way users could ask her AI additional questions to get additional information about the answers to their queries. AI was also seen prompting users to consider certain factors related to the technology, such as battery life and other quality aspects.

The company has rolled out AI Overview to the main Google app on Android alongside Circle to Search. Overviews appear at multiple search moments through Lens, giving users access to a wealth of information collected about the subject matter and sources of AI.

Search is set to undergo further AI and SGE testing as Google appointed Liz Reid as its new chief on March 19th. Reid touted his AI background at Google before taking on the role to further lead search through the use of the company’s generative AI software. In his announcement, Reid said Search will focus on the ability to understand context-rich queries and further implement SGE and AI overview.

The same is true for tests currently being conducted for users who are not registered with SGE. That means the addition of AI is likely on the horizon.
