Be aware that installing very old apps poses a security risk. This also applies to apps that are compatible with older versions of Android. Android currently does not allow you to install apps created for Android 5 (Lollipop) or earlier. However, a new report suggests that Android 15 will not be able to install apps created for Android 6 (Marshmallow).
We are now revealing more information about Android 15. If you’re interested, check out our overview of some of the most exciting features coming to Android 15. A beta version of the latest version of Android will eventually be released. More people will be able to try out these exciting features.
Android 15 may not be able to install apps for Android 6
This change is intended to make Android devices more secure. Older versions of Android have less stringent security requirements. This means it is easy for malicious app developers to create apps that can damage or infiltrate your system. Therefore, forcing companies to create apps targeting newer versions of Android with stricter security protocols can help reduce that risk.
Currently, Android 14 does not allow users to install apps that target SDK version 22, also known as Android 5 Lollipop. The company chose his Android 5 because Android 6 brought innovative security features.
Now, it looks like the company is tightening its grip even further.Android Engineer Mishaal Rahmen using the latest Android 15 developer preview I tried to install an app targeting Android 6. But it was blocked. I then tried to install the same app on my phone using Android 14 and it installed.
Therefore, it appears that Android 15 will no longer be able to download apps targeted for Android 6. This will encourage developers to update their apps if they haven’t been updated in years.
If you’re planning on sideloading apps from an older version of Android, you’re out of luck. This change also applies to sideloaded apps.
