dunesis, in all its volumes and adaptations, a work of science fiction.A few things happen below dunes: Prophecy, folding space using the mind, telepathic control of others, determining truth through telepathy. Does it sound like science fiction? Frank Herbert arrived at Wild Mind Power because he reasoned that at some point AI would prove dangerous. Perhaps at that point humanity will ban AI. Thousands of years from now, when people have to rely on the human mind for complex calculations, we may end up with minds that can fold space and therefore predict the future. . Is this science fiction? If so, is it hard or soft science fiction? What do those terms mean anyway? Here’s more from Gary Westlake of DePauw University:
As a way to begin a discussion about hard science fiction, it’s certainly useful to consider when and how the term came into being.
During the 1950s and 1960s, there were some tentative efforts to establish labels for such categories. In 1955, C.S. Lewis wrote Jules Verne’s 20,000 miles under the sea“The Land Ironclads” by H.G. Wells, “The Land Ironclads” by Arthur C. Clarke Prelude to space “The Engineer’s Story”… Gregory Benford recalls a conversation with Paul Anderson in the early 1960s, in which they used the phrase “Campbellian SF” (personal communication), while Harlan Ellison used the phrase “Campbellish SF” and ” Campbell’s Heavy Science Story” was used. and “Campbell’s dull science fiction,” which criticizes Frank Herbert’s novels. dragon in the sea In 1968…Clark’s “Wind from the Sun” blurb [then called “Sunjammer”],1 Donald A. Wollheim and Terry Carr write: “Just as there is a subgenre within the mystery field called ‘police procedural fiction’…a type of story that is deeply concerned with how the future works…may be called ‘procedural science fiction’… And Arthur C. Clarke proved himself a master of the form with stories like “Prelude to Space” and “The Fall of the Sands.”
