iPhone 16 leaks are starting to pile up ahead of its scheduled September launch, and the latest rumors reaching us suggest that the phone will come with RAM and storage upgrades, as well as additional AI features, among other things. They say they plan to take action.
This is according to a report from South Korea (via a famous tipster) @Tech_Reve), the base-level iPhone 16 could come with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, or both to give the integrated AI additional room to think, store, and process commands. It says that there is a sex.
For comparison, the cheapest iPhone 15 has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (though 256GB and 512GB versions are also available). The additional work required by generative AI tools requires additional headroom.
Only Gemini Nano, Google’s smallest AI model, is compact enough to fit into smartphones (specifically Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 devices). Although that may change in the future, currently much of the AI computation is offloaded to the cloud.
AI everywhere, at the same time
An interesting report was recently released by a Korean securities company. Some analysts speculate that on-device AI will increase the RAM capacity of the iPhone 16. Apple prides itself on performing as much computing work as possible locally, without transferring streams of data to or from servers on the web. This means more information is stored only on your phone or laptop, making it safe and private.
The iPhone 16 may need some extra grunt if the AI features Apple has been promising are going to make it happen. However, as the tipster admits, nothing is confirmed yet and Apple’s plans are still subject to change. It also raises the question of how much of this AI functionality might trickle down to older, less powerful mobile devices.
We don’t know exactly what these AI features from Apple will look like, but iOS 18 will include a number of generative AI tools similar to those seen on other phones. There are all signs that (and oddly enough, Google might be able to help too).
Apple is likely to announce more at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), which is usually held in June of each year. After that, a public beta of iOS 18 will be available, and eventually new iPhone 16 devices will be available in September.
