Peru recovers 4,600 culturally significant items from across the United States and Europe

More than 4,000 items of cultural significance, including textiles, pottery and clothing, were repatriated to their country of origin, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Wednesday that 4,600 cultural objects from the United States and European countries including Germany, Italy and Switzerland have been returned to the South American country.

The statement said 4,556 of the items returned were from a collection of archaeological materials owned by the late American archaeologist and anthropologist John Lowe. A further 33 items were returned from Italy, 21 of which were previously confiscated from museums by Italian authorities, the statement continued. These items included clothing and pottery from the Nazca, Huari, Incan, Paracas, and Chimu cultures.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an 18th or 19th century silver incense burner was returned from Portugal, and other archaeological items were returned voluntarily by Germany and the Netherlands. Swiss authorities also seized and repatriated four pieces of pre-Hispanic pottery, the statement continued.
