Amid anger over the government funding bill, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced a motion to expel Mike Johnson from the speakership, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The House must consider Greene’s motion within two days of her approval. The Legislature is scheduled to go into a two-week recess, and Greene told reporters she would not convene the resolution on Friday, meaning the time to force a vote has not yet begun.
Asked by CNN for a response, Johnson did not respond, instead waving his hand to dismiss the question.
After Greene introduced the motion, her Republican colleagues swarmed her. A source close to her conversation told CNN that she was trying to convince the Georgia Republican lawmaker, a number of whom are Republicans, not to file the motion. Two of the members of Congress who were there, Rep. Barry Loudermilk and Rep. Kat Cammack, were observed having extended conversations with Mr. Greene.
Part of the argument against Greene from her Republican colleagues was that if she did this, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries could mistakenly become speaker. A source who witnessed the conversation told CNN.
