Vaughan Gething has been chosen as the new First Minister of Wales following a vote in the Welsh Assembly.

He replaces Mark Drakeford, who resigned in an emotional speech on Tuesday after five years at the helm.

Mr Gething, who will be Europe’s first black national government leader, said he wanted to lead a Wales “full of hope, ambition and unity”.

He was supported by 27 Senedd MPs, with Tory Andrew RT Davies receiving 13 votes and Plaid Cymru’s Lun ap Iorworth receiving 11 votes.

Mr Gething’s name has now been sent to the Crown for approval.

Once the king complies, Gething can take the oath and concentrate on appointing ministers.

In his first words after being named first minister, Mr Gething thanked Mr Drakeford “for everything he has done for Wales”.

He said becoming the first black minister to become a minister was “a matter of pride for most Welsh people today, but for me it is also a daunting responsibility and one that I cannot take lightly.”

Mr Gething, 50, said he was looking forward to “standing up for Wales and devolution in the coming weeks and months”.

“But I am relishing the opportunity to work for Wales with a new UK Government that is investing in the partnership and the future of Wales,” he said, adding that Labor’s victory in the UK general election, due in the next 10 months, is set to continue. predicted.

He said he wanted to overcome what he called “the forces of division” and promote “kinder and more effective politics.”

“As the first minister, I will continue to put together a government that actively advocates progressive politics.

“To remind people that only by coming together can we achieve for the many.”

Vaughan Gething was nominated by the Welsh Labor leader, defeating Education Minister Jeremy Miles with 51.7% of the vote.

Mr Gething was congratulated by Welsh Conservative Senedd Group Leader Andrew R.T. He urged them to make a “fresh start” by contributing to the cause. .

“Our message to Vaughan is clear: if you scrap plans for more politicians, scrap the 20mph speed limit, scrap the sustainable farming system in its current form If you’re ready, we’ll work with you to make people’s priorities a reality.” ”

Plaid Siml party leader Lun ap Aiollworth also welcomed Mr Gething’s new role, but added: “Ongoing questions surrounding Mr Vaughan Gething’s campaign contributions pose a serious threat to the Prime Minister’s job.” “It’s giving us clouds,” he warned.

Some Labor politicians are unhappy that the next prime minister’s leadership team is receiving donations from companies whose owners have been convicted of environmental crimes.

Dawson Environmental Group, a company based in Mr Gething’s Cardiff South and Penarth constituency, has donated £200,000 to his campaign.

Gething said the rules for funding future campaigns should be reviewed.

“We will do everything in our power to hold the new First Minister and the Welsh Labor Government to account,” Mr Ap Iorworth said.
