Arsenal defender Ben White could have joined four of Europe’s elite clubs before signing a new contract with the Gunners.
The 26-year-old committed his long-term future to Mikel Arteta’s side on Thursday.
White has penned a new four-year contract which will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2028, with an option to extend until 2029.
He has become an integral part of Arsenal’s bid for their first Premier League title in 20 years.
Since joining from Brighton in 2021, White has played at right-back and centre-back.
Although he always had the technical ability to reach the top level, questions persisted over his complex personality.
A new report from The Athletic attempts to find out what makes White the most enigmatic player in English football.
When contract negotiations with Arsenal began, White’s agents sought to secure the best deal possible for their client.

They commissioned a report from Analytics FC, an innovative sports consultancy that uncovers player data. What they got back sums up White’s talent.
Compared to other full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues, he is in the top 10 percent of “progressive” short passers.
Therefore, combined with his ability to play both wide and centrally, the report concluded that he would be a perfect fit for some of the continent’s top teams.
Among the teams proposed to White were AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester City.

If White were to come on the market, all four teams would be interested. However, he has decided to remain in north London after entering negotiations in September 2023.
Following the announcement of his new contract, England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed that White did not wish to be eligible for international selection for the time being.
He has not been involved in any way with the Three Lions since leaving the England camp during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
